September Suicide Prevention Month

As members of Associated Builders and Contractors, we are helping employers create safer cultures, provide education to identify and help those at risk, raise awareness about this crisis and normalize conversations around suicide and mental health. Other resources available to employers include free suicide prevention training, the Suicide Prevention Lifeline call center, the Crisis Text Line and the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention.

CIASP is dedicated to changing the statistics by educating and equipping organizations, industry service providers and construction professionals to STAND Up for suicide prevention and address it as a health and safety priority.

Senator Niello celebrates Apprenticeship Week by presenting Senate Concurrent Resolution 55 on the Senate floor. With the Senator are two electrical apprentices, Karmin Peterson and John Lipary who both part of ABC's program‬. In 2025, National Apprenticeship Week celebrates its 11th anniversary of raising awareness of the vital role that apprenticeships play in providing opportunities to learn and earn on the pathway to good quality jobs and well-paying careers with the opportunity for career advancement.

Governor Newsom proclaims Apprenticeship Day

We hope this guide helps you navigate the upcoming propositions. As an association, ABC of CA has consistently opposed Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) mandates because:

Taxpayer Fairness through Open Competition: Hardworking taxpayers deserve efficient and effective policies that will encourage all qualified contractors to compete to build long-lasting, quality projects at the best price. Government-mandated PLAs discourage this process and prevents the more than 89% of the U.S. construction workforce who are not members of a union from bidding and working on projects in their own communities funded by their tax dollars.

Higher costs: Anti-competitive and costly PLAs restrict open, fair and competitive bidding on public works projects. By preventing cost efficient local businesses from bidding on contracts to build roads, bridges, schools and other structures, this guarantees that taxpayers pay 12% to 20% more and the local community benefits less.
